Do you know what the difference is between weather and whether? Have you ever even heard of the word wether? Weather, whether, and wether are three homophones that sound very similar but are not spelled the same and have very different meanings.

Weather Meaning

Weather is a noun that means the state of the atmosphere at a particular time or place; it can be hot, cold, rainy, snowy, and so on. 

As a verb, to weather means to endure or to withstand a challenging experience. It can also be an adjective that means to erode (i.e., something becomes weathered when it is exposed to the atmosphere).   

Examples of Weather in a Sentence

  • What’s the weather like today? Is it raining?
  • They will be able to weather any storm as long as they are together.
  • The furniture had weathered because it was left outside. 

Whether Meaning

Whether is a conjunction that is usually used to indicate an indirect question involving stated or implied alternatives—a choice. 

Whether is similar to the conjunction if, but they are used for different purposes.  

Examples of Whether in a Sentence

  • I wonder whether I need an umbrella because the weather forecast says it’s going to rain today. 
  • Whether I win or lose, it doesn’t matter.
  • Whether he wins or loses the election does not matter to me; all that matters is that he runs a fair campaign and treats his opponent with respect.

Wether Meaning

Wether is a noun that means a male sheep or goat that has been castrated before maturity. 

A lot of people probably think that wether is a misspelling of the weather or whether, but it’s a real word!

A common word that originated from wether is bellwether, which means something/someone that takes the lead or indicates trends. Shepherds or goatherds would attach a bell to the lead wether, and the ringing would signal to the other animals to follow that wether.

  • This wether has spots all over him. 
  • Wethers eat grass, hay, and grain.
  • The farmer chose the wether as the grand prize for the winner of his contest.
